Meet the Founder
Jill Campbell didn't get into the world of apps with a background as a software developer, venture capitalist or even a website entrepreneur. She didn't create an app to promote an existing product or to take advantage of an emerging market. But as a businessperson, as a woman, and as a mother, she recognized the need for a multifunctional personal protection safety system that would fit any lifestyle, from college students, to working women, to athletes, and beyond.
A few years ago, Jill was adjusting to life on her own after becoming a widow. "You have a different level of vulnerability during times of transition," she says today. As principal of Campbell Tax and Financial Services, she tends to the financial health of hundreds of clients and thinks in terms of risk management. It was from that perspective that she began to envision a monitoring system that would increase her peace of mind without impinging on her freedom and independence.
However, her idea was ahead of its time. Then came the dawning of the Age of Apps.
To bring her concept to fruition, Jill assembled a team that began working with an incubator for tech start-ups. This team of dedicated professionals translated into code the ideas she had sketched out and in September 2011 Jill's idea became a reality. WatchMe911™, a personal protection safety app for women, was launched in the iTunes App Store.
But Jill didn't stop there! When she learned of the Obama Administration's technology challenge, Apps Against Abuse, she knew the app her team had developed for working women could be adapted to assist college-aged young women and men stay safer.
The Apps Against Abuse competition, lead by Vice President Biden, was created to engage software developers to help find a solution to the alarmingly high incidences of sexual violence and abuse of college aged young women. Jill and her team jumped at the opportunity to participate and created OnWatchOnCampus®, the personal protection safety app for college-aged students.
Vice President Biden and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius announced on November 1, 2011 that OnWatch™ was the winner of the Apps Against Abuse Technology Challenge. Jill was thrilled and deeply gratified when Vice President Biden invited her to the White House on April 18, 2012 to mark the formal launch of OnWatchOnCampus® in the iTunes App Store.
Jill and her company are continuing to innovate and develop other mobile app products that will help increase the quality of life for many different segments of our society.
